Q & A of the Day - Do I need to do a dead test on these fan circuits, or more?
Question: I have been given the job of cabling and connecting impulse and extract fans for an underground car park. These are fed from a main control panel (wired by others). The feed for the main control panel is being installed by another company.

I've been asked only to do the dead test on the fan circuits. Is this OK? What forms could I issue if any for this? With the system being fed by the main control panel, is testing of the fans necessary? I would think so.

Answer: You should ask for the installation certification and test results for the sub-main to the control panel as your design information. If you are then installing final circuits to extract fans, these should be tested in accordance with BS 7671:2008, and upon completion you should issue a BS7671 Installation Certificate for circuits you have installed from the control panel (which should be treated as a distribution board).

Also, the fans should have a functional test to ensure that they are working as expected, and certified in accordance with Part F of the Building Regulations.
