Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, concerning requirements for electrical installation work in Scotland, is answered by the ECA:
I'd like - as a hobby - to start my own business while on leave, carrying out work in Scotland on new build houses. Can I self-certify my own work without joining SELECT or the NICEIC? Having to do this would not be viable for a hobby.
Also, will the local council(s) involved accept my test certificates?
Answer: Our understanding is that in Scotland you cannot self-certify your own electrical work in most cases, unless you are registered with SELECT or the NICEIC on their respective Certification of Construction schemes in accordance with the Scottish Building Regulations (SBR).
We suggest that you talk to the local Building Control office.
