Q & A of the Day - Can I install submains cables on the same cable tray?
Question: Is it permissible to install submains cables from a 230V static inverter supplying local DBs on the same cable tray as submains cables supplying general lighting and power DBs?

The submains are MICC/LSF sheathed cables and the general L&P submains are XLPE/SWA/LSF cables.

Also, do these cable systems have to be segregated from each other? And if so, by how much distance - 50mm, 100mm?

Answer: Yes - It is permissible to install emergency lighting cable adjacent to general mains cables providing that all cables are insulated to the highest voltage present.

The emergency lighting cables should have a duration of survival against fire of 60 minutes when tested in accordance with BS EN 50200:2000 (which corresponds to a classification of PH 60 as detailed in BS EN 50200:2000, Annex D). In your case, as all cables are insulated to 230V and you are using MICC, which has a survival time against fire of 120 minutes, it is acceptable.
