Installing undertile heating is a ‘walkover’ with the all-in-one mat-based system that comes ready to fit from electric heating market leader Dimplex.

Available in modular packs and in a range of mat sizes to meet demand for all types of installations, the Dimplex undertile heating system is ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, en-suites and conservatories. The system comes with a 10-year warranty and benefits from the support of an established brand leader. Installation is a simple six-step process, thanks to its flexibility of design and connection point that uses only one heating wire.

Ideal for both new build and refurbishments, the system is electric so it’s safe, permanent and maintenance-free.  The flexible mesh allows easy installation and manipulation and is one of the thinnest dual core cables available, with an element depth of only three millimetres.

Fitting is easy onto ply or preferably insulated tile backer board on top of either suspended timber floors or solid concrete floors, ensuring the surface is smooth.  The mats (not the wire!) are cut to fit and can be turned and flipped to fit the area to be heated. A range of six mat sizes are available from 1m2 to 6m2 so that uniform coverage can be achieved even in the most awkward of room shapes. The mats are then secured using the tape provided with the package.

Installation of the floor temperature sensing probe is step three and this links to an easy-to-control thermostatic programmer to ensure economy of use by ensuring the heating is set independently of other heating appliances to the user’s exact hourly, daily and weekly needs. The programmer should be installed outside the bathroom into a standard single-gang backing box and protected by an RCD on the electrical supply.

Step five is to connect the mats and floor sensing probe to the thermostat and test, before the final step of tiling.  Tiling should be completed as soon as possible post-installation to minimise the risk of damage or disruption to the mats and wires.

The system is ideal for all tiled floors, including natural stone and ceramic which are increasingly popular in conservatories, kitchens and bathrooms.
