Crabtree supply a range of single phase and three phase surge protection devices for industrial and commercial applications, designed to guard against transient or surge voltages.
These voltages show short, pulse like, peaks with steep rising edges and may be caused by external events like lightning strikes or by internal circumstances, e.g. the switching of large electrical currents or loads. To meet the selection requirements stated within the 17th edition of the wiring regulations, the devices are either Type 1, Type 2 or combination Type 1+2.
Regardless of the origin of the surge, the consequences to an electrical installation with no protection are the same. Unchecked, long term exposure to even low levels of transient overvoltage may reduce the life of components in computers and many other valuable electronic devices associated with the control of industrial or commercial equipment. Exposure to higher levels however can result in immediate damage and can burn out circuit boards with the possibility of not only equipment loss but also the risk of fire.
Clearly any voltage dependent equipment that forms part of a fixed electrical installation is vulnerable, with the consequent potential loss of precious data, costly equipment replacement and interruption of work.
Crabtree offer guidance on the selection of relevant surge protection devices and information is available on request. Please email [email protected] or telephone 01543 455000
