Case Study: Basor PVC Cable Tray selected for challenging underground hospital environment

Published: 1 September 2026 Category: News

When undertaking mechanical and electrical upgrades at Royal Bolton Hospital, contractor Geoffrey Robinson Ltd required a cable management solution capable of performing reliably within a tunnel located beneath the hospital.

Case Study: Basor PVC Cable Tray selected for challenging underground hospital environment

The application presented a demanding combination of dampness, heat and humidity, which had already caused visible corrosion to existing metal cable tray installations on site.

After assessing the available options, the contractor selected Basor PVC Cable Tray from Marshall-Tufflex to provide a robust, non-metallic containment system for lightweight data cabling in a difficult working environment. In total, 1 km of PVC cable tray was installed beneath the hospital.

The project formed part of wider mechanical and electrical services upgrades being carried out at Royal Bolton Hospital. The installation involved routing data cabling through an underground service tunnel, where prolonged exposure to damp and humid conditions can rapidly degrade conventional metal containment systems.

Because the existing metal tray in the tunnel had already deteriorated, corrosion resistance was a key consideration. The contractor needed a solution that would support the required cabling while remaining practical and efficient to install in a hot, humid and difficult environment.

Marshall-Tufflex supplied Basor PVC Cable Tray and accessories via LED Electrical in Blackburn, providing a complete non-metallic containment system for the installation.

Why Basor PVC Cable Tray was chosen

  • Provides a non-metallic cable management solution for damp, hot and humid conditions.

  • Helps eliminate the corrosion issues associated with metal tray in moisture-heavy environments.

  • Includes accessories for a consistent system throughout the installation.

  • Suitable for lightweight data cabling.

  • Lightweight and easy to work with, helping reduce time spent on site.

  • Supports faster installation in a challenging and uncomfortable tunnel environment.

“The tunnel beneath the hospital is an extremely damp, hot and humid environment, so corrosion resistance was a major factor in selecting the cable management system. With 1 km of tray to install, we needed a tray that was easy to work with, and the lightweight design allowed the installation team to complete the work quickly, reducing the amount of time spent working in a difficult environment.” Guy Owen, Geoffrey Robinson Ltd

Long-term performance in a challenging environment

The Royal Bolton Hospital project demonstrates how Basor PVC Cable Tray can provide a practical and durable alternative to traditional metal containment in difficult environments. By combining corrosion resistance with ease of installation, the system helped the contractor deliver a fast, reliable cable management solution while reducing time spent working in the hospital tunnel.

PVC cable tray is available from Marshall-Tufflex via UK electrical wholesalers.
