Council sets example for Part P compliance
On January 1st this year, Part P of the Building Regulations was introduced to help put an end to cowboy electricians by specifying that, with the exception of minor works such as replacing sockets or ceiling roses, anyone undertaking any domestic electrical installation work must notify their Local Authority Building Control before work begins, unless the work is carried out by a Part P registered installer.

Electrical contractors qualify to self-certify their work is fully up to the standards required by registering with a government approved Competent Person Scheme, such as that operated by BRE Certification with the Electrical Contractors' Association (ECA).

Pro-active measures:

The move to have its electricians Part P certified is the latest in a line of pro-active measures taken by Nuneaton & Bedworth Council to enhance its electrical division.

In November 2004, the council also became a member of the Electrical Contractors' Association, which represents the interests of 2,300 member companies involved in electrical installation work.

Steve Woolley, building maintenance manager at Nuneaton & Bedworth Council, comments: "Joining the ECA was important for us as the association is synonymous with professionalism, something our electricians pride themselves on. Being a member of an organisation such as the ECA also has important benefits in terms of the reassurance it provides. Anyone working with us knows that all our electricians have been assessed to the highest industry standards."

Steve Roberts, ECA West Midlands regional manager, believes the Council's pro-active response to the growing emphasis on electrical safety is very important for the region.

He commented: "Nuneaton & Bedworth Council has really set a great example to contractors in the region by ensuring that their own electricians have been Part P approved. Hopefully this move will encourage electrical contractors across the West Midlands to follow suit."
