Both Fluke's latest multifunction testers the 1652 and 1653 verify conformity with the 16th Edition IEE Wiring Regulations all in one instrument however, the 1653 additionally offers a phase rotation test, PC download capability and Earth electrode test.

The 1 April 2004 amendment to BS 7671:2001 to change the core colours of 3-phase cables makes for possible confusion during new wiring installation, especially when added to existing cabling infrastructure. The phase sequence measurement function of the 1653 model facilitates rapid, reliable verification of the new wiring.

The Fluke/Robin 1653 also offers, within the one instrument, earth resistance measurement. An optional Earth Spike Test Kit provides two auxiliary spikes that can be pushed in the ground at set distances from the installation's earth electrode. Three-wire testing provides accurate earth resistance measurement.

A time-saving function:

One important feature of both the Fluke/Robin 1652 and 1653 is that they can perform automatic trip time and tripping current level (ramp) tests of residual current activated devices (RCDs) - both DC-sensitive and delayed-response types. This time-saving function measures tripping time in an automatic sequence of six tests. This eliminates the need to keep returning to the installation tester after resetting a tripped RCD: results are held in temporary memory and can be stepped through when the test has finished.

The 1653 model also offers storage of test results, which can be uploaded to a PC to generate reports with optional FlukeView Forms software. Both models are supplied as complete kits and come equipped with test leads, crocodile clips, heavy-duty carrying case, neck strap, mains connection lead, language reference card and an operating manual on CD-ROM. The 1653 includes an IR adaptor for PC connection.

The Fluke web site www.fluke.co.uk lists a series of downloadable installation tester Application Notes that highlight particular uses. The 1652 and 1653 installation testers perform all the primary tests of voltage, frequency, continuity, insulation resistance, loop impedance, as well as PSC and PFC tests, as laid down in BS 7671:2001. Safe usage is enhanced with a built-in live voltage indicator, and an integrated test button on a slim probe, which offers one-handed measurement even of hard to reach points.

Both units are extremely easy-to-operate, feature a large backlit display with a wide viewing angle, and, weighing less than 1.2kg, they can be worn comfortably round the neck for long periods.
