A new and compact static inverter by Cooper Lighting and Security brings central battery technology to smaller emergency-lighting applications:
The new Menvier AC500VA/M3 compact static inverter from Cooper Lighting and Security has been designed specifically to meet the requirements of applications where space or cost constraints might otherwise have ruled out the use of a central battery system for powering emergency lighting.
Even though competitively priced, the inverter offers as standard many features normally only associated with larger units, including a rated output of 500VA/400W, four independently fused outputs, battery deep-discharge protection, automatic temperature compensation and a clear, informative system-status display panel.
Fully compliant with the latest BS EN50171:2001 standard, the new unit is housed in a zinc-coated steel cubicle measuring just 970 (H) x 530 (W) x 400 (D) mm, which makes it ideal for use in locations such as schools and colleges, public houses, restaurants, nursing homes, community centres and GP surgeries.

The AC500VA/M3 provides a high-quality 230V AC sinusoidal output, allowing any suitable, unmodified mains luminaire to be operated at full light output in emergency mode.
In 'mains healthy' condition, luminaires designated for emergency use are powered from the normal mains via a bypass contactor inside the cubicle, while the system charges the batteries and stores power, ready for emergency operation.
In the event of a mains failure, the system provides emergency power to the designated luminaires until the mains supply has been restored or, in the event of extended mains failure, for the system's rated duration of three hours.
The system status panel consists of a digital LCD meter displaying voltage or current, together with LED indicators for Power On, Battery High/Low Volts, Charge Fail, Deep Discharge Protection, and Inverter Running.
An internal audible alarm sounds if any fault conditions occur, and the inverter also includes common volt-free contacts for remote signalling, as well as connection terminals for an optional remote alarm unit.
The AC500VA/M3 uses valve-regulated lead acid batteries with a 10-year design life, and these are capable of a full recharge within 24 hours, reaching 80% capacity within 12 hours.
