Q & A of the Day – While street lighting does not fall under building control, must it be tested by a competent person?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I receive electrical testing certificates from your members for new installations that prove they were installed tested and inspected by a competent person, which I am more than happy with.

We have our own electricians who are competently trained to the 17th Edition (BS 7671) and who install or replace our own street lighting systems. Not all have been on the testing course, but they will be when budget is available.

What I am trying to find out is, after the street lighting installation is complete, must it be tested, and signed off?

Or is it sufficient that the electrician is a competent person?

I am aware street lighting does not fall under building control. Must it be tested?

Question: Street lighting now comes under 559.10 of BS 7671:2008(2011) and will require to be inspected and tested following initial installation, and also after a programmed inspection and test.

Following this, the appropriate certification should be issued. Provided that your electrical staff are competent, they can carry out the inspection, testing and certification.
