Q & A of the Day – What qualifications will I need to carry work on this type of maintenance job?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I’ve been approached by a maintenance contractor who is looking after mainly domestic rental properties to become his ‘on the books’ maintenance electrician. As such, he will attend breakdowns on appliances, fixed wiring and accessories.

I am 17th Edition qualified, so my questions are:
  • What other qualifications will I need to carry work on this type of job?
  • What, if any, registration will the maintenance contractor need?
  • How does he go about getting it?
Answer: In Scotland, if work is carried out under a Building Warrant, the electrical contractor requires to be registered in a Certifier of Construction scheme currently provided by SELECT and the NICEIC.

Regulation 16 of the Electricity at Work Regulations requires persons to be competent (sufficient technical knowledge, practical skills and experience) to prevent danger and injury.

More specialised work, such as the maintenance of high-voltage switchgear, would require additional training and experience.
