This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: I have an earth pit to locate on a commercial electrical installation job, which is for a secondary supply to the building concerned. The supply is TT and is to be used as emergency power to the lift in the event of failure of the main supply.

I need to put an earth rod in for the secondary supply. The best position for this is in the basement. Is there any reason why this is not possible?

Answer: BS 7671:2008 does not specify the exact location of the earth rod. However, you should first ensure that you do not damage the foundations of the building when installing it.
