Q & A of the Day - Must I upgrade this whole board to the 17th Edition?
Question: I'm doing a job where there has been a large extension built on to an existing property. I intended to run an SWA sub-main from the main supply to a new distribution board, rather than replacing and upgrading the existing board.

My question is, can I run a sub-main from the existing board without having to upgrade the whole board to the 17th Edition requirements?

Answer: Existing installations that have been designed and installed to earlier editions of the regulations may not comply with BS7671:2008 in every respect. This does not necessarily mean that these installations are unsafe or require upgrading. Therefore upgrading of existing equipment is not generally required unless it is unsafe.

However, any alteration or addition to an existing installation must comply with the current Edition of BS 7671 (the 17th Edition).
