Question: Can you clarify when the box for 'Further Investigation' should be marked as 'yes' on the new Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR).

Is it only when an item on the inspection schedule cannot be verified, or would a Classification Code C3 observation also require further investigation (as C1 & C2 would require remedial works and not further investigation)?

Answer: Where an observation can be attributed a C1, C2 or C3, further investigation would not be required for the purposes of completing the condition report.

Electrical Safety Council Best Practice Guide 4 (Issue 3) provides examples of Classification Codes for domestic and similar electrical installations. It also includes an example of an observation requiring further investigation, i.e. where the characteristics of the electricity supply (such as voltage or Ze) do not conform with supply industry norms.
