Q & A of the Day - Does this fire alarm comply with BS5839?
Question: I have just carried out a Service and Inspection on the fire alarm of a four-storey property - offices on ground floor and flats above with basement below. All four zones are wired in 1mm twin & earth and the two sounder circuits are wired in fire rated cable.

Where do I stand with regard to this fire alarm complying with BS5839? As it is an existing installation, can I just make a note on the certificate?

Note that there is no detection in the basement and this is where the incoming supply enters the building. The basement is rented out for storage purposes.

Answer: You should record any deterioration, defects and non-compliance with the requirements of the regulations. Where possible, the initial certification and any previous inspection records should be taken into account. A competent person should then decide whether the design of the system is adequate.
