Q & A of the Day – Are some electrical installers incompetent?

Question: I recently looked at questions and answers in this issue regarding a chap asking why he does not get a voltage reading when testing between neutral and earth. You rightly explained, but surely, if this chap is being trusted to test an installation, the answer to this question should have been part of his basic knowledge?

It worries me that we have people being trusted to test installations who simply do not know the real basics. Surely the advice should have included further advice to go back to technical college a learn bit more, before embarking on a career in testing which - if not done correctly - could lead to danger and death?

Answer: In general terms, that is why Voltimum exists.

There are numerous questions and answers every day. Some questions are quite easy to answer; others may take a little more time if some research is required.

Basically, not everybody is perfect and some of us need a little explanation to gain further understanding.

With regard to training, all of us need to enhance our competencies by keeping up-to-date with both basic and current requirements. For BS 7671, this should be carried out, generally, every five years.
