Q & A of the Day - What is the computer power requirement?
Question: We're a computer network installation company in Uganda, normally dealing with just the network side of things. We have recently been asked to quote for integrated data and power via MK Prestige trunking.

There are three rooms, each of 24 computers each (the rated PSU's consumption / computer is 3.0A and for each monitor is 1.2A). Asking various electrical contractors around here, we are getting two answers regarding the power requirements.

One camp states that each room will take 96A continuous all the time; the other camp says you have to allow for the worst-case scenario of all the computers being turned on at the same time, and double this figure to nearly 200A. Which, in your experience, is right? Expertise in such matters is in short supply here - much like the electricity - and I would value a more expert opinion.

Answer: Based upon the figures you have quoted, with all the computers on at the same time, the load for each room would be 24 x (3 + 1.2) = 100.8A. You may (at your discretion) wish to allow for additional future loading (i.e. additional equipment in the room) in calculating the maximum demand.
