Q & A of the Day - SY CC cable used outside
Question: Does SY CC cable contain any UV stabiliser? An air-conditioning installer has wired the unit outside in SY CC cable, and I have to make the final connection to the consumer unit. He has assured me that it does have UV stabilisation, but I have, in the past, come across this type of cable splitting when used outside.

Answer: SY cable has a clear PVC sheath and, in general, is not recommended for outdoor use.

Assuming it is actually this type of cable that is being used, then it is intended for indoor use where some mechanical protection is needed. Outdoor installation is, in general, not recommended. The clear sheath is PVC and may have little UV protection. Unfortunately, it is often used in this sort of application because of its flexibility, but it may degrade quickly. It is worth checking with the manufacturer of the cable because some manufacturers claim that their SY cable is suitable for outdoor use.
