Patrick asks this question, which concerns BS 5266, the emergency lighting code of practise, and whether this would require a storeroom to have emergency lighting installed. It has been answered by the Lighting Industry Association (Theme - Lighting):

Question: My understanding is that all rooms from which people need to exit safely on loss of normal lighting effectively contain escape routes, as defined by BS 5266.
I have been presented with a design that does not include escape lighting in a storeroom that is sized 8 x 2.5m2, and I have been told that this room does not require emergency lighting coverage under BS 5266.
Is this correct? Are such spaces not subject to the requirements of BS 5266?
Answer: BS 5266 does not require a general store room of 20m2 (8 x 2.5m) to have emergency lighting - unless there are hazardous materials stored in the room.
However, if you feel that you need emergency lighting in this store room, you are free to add this to your specification.
