Under LVD, should cables be CE marked?

Published: 13 July 2018 Category: Q&A

A Voltimum user asks BASEC's Dr, Jeremy Hodge a question about CE marking and cable.

Under LVD, should cables be CE marked?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered by our Voltimum Experts.

Question:

1) To be legally sold in the EU; should cables be CE marked to the LVD and technical files etc held by the manufacturer?

2) Presumably, this cannot apply to MV Cables - should they be CE marked and if so, to the EHSRs of what directive?

Thanks as always

Colin

Yes, cables falling within the scope of the Low Voltage Directive (generally those from 50V up to 1000V AC) must be CE marked, the relevant EC Declarations of Conformity made and Technical Files created and held by the relevant party manufacturing the cables or placing them on the market in the EU. CE marking does not have to be on the cable itself but may be on the packaging.

MV cables would fall outside the scope of the LVD on a voltage basis, and hence would not need the same LVD documentation etc. Other regulations, such as the The Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002, may apply to such products.
