Q & A of the Day – Is there a minimum PF for domestic, commercial and industrial Installations?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: (i) Is there a minimum power factor (PF) for domestic, commercial and industrial Installations, and (Ii) are they based on a rule of thumb, prescribed industry standard (which standard?) or legislated (which legislation)?

Answer: We are not aware of any minimum power factor under the electricity, safety, quality and continuity regulations.

The actual power factor for an installation will depend on the external power factor and the amount of reactive load within the installation.

Most distribution network operators will supply a rule of thumb power factor figure for their networks.
