The Electrical Safety Council’s (ESC - www.esc.org.uk) Best Practice Guide No. 6, Issue 2, is the latest update to this excellent series of Best Practice Guides published by the organisation, in association with leading industry bodies for the benefit of electrical contractors and installers, and their customers:

The aim of this ESC Best Practice Guide for consumer unit replacement in domestic and similar premises is to promote best practice by providing practical advice and guidance for designers, installers, verifiers and inspectors, where the consumer unit or other main switchgear is being replaced in a domestic or similar premises wired in accordance with BS 7671:2008 (2011) or earlier versions of the IET Wiring Regulations.

The guidance is intended to protect customers and installers against dangerous situations that could arise from the existing installation.
