Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This Question of the Day, concerning Part P of the Building Regulations and certification for the electrical installation of a garden office, is answered by the ECA:
I consider that my certification is for the sub-main that I've installed, connecting to the client's consumers unit.
The manufacturers left no certification on site and have advised my client that I am responsible for certification, and for Part P of the garden office.
What should the manufacturer have left on site in the way of certification, and what is required for my client to obtain his Part P certification for the garden office?
Answer: You can only self-certify the Part P work you have done.
If the office company designed and installed the office installation, it should be supplying the necessary BS 7671 certification for it. As the work was completed on site, Part P certification is also needed. If the company couldn't do it, Building Control should have been notified.
You should not have connected it without the necessary certification.
