Q & A of the Day - Can we parallel three sub-main feeder cables?
Question: We have a 400kW machine to feed at 0.8 power factor TP/N - a distance 127m.

Is it possible to parallel up three smaller sub-main feeder cables, rather then using two larger cables? I would like to do this because of the difficulty manhandling them on site.

If so, what are the formulas with regards to voltage drop, short circuit protection and the harmonics in the three parallel cables?

Answer: Yes - subject to the cables being of the same size and installed in the same route, you can parallel these cables.

The voltage drop calculation result would then need to be divided by three.
