Despite the perennial problem the programme has, that is the developers going over budget, all agree that the end result really warranted the extra expense, and indeed the cost would have been much higher if it weren't for the good offices of manufacturers like MK Electric, which took on the task of developing special products to suit the project.

The house - in Burgh Heath, Surrey - was a 1930s property, built in the art-deco style. Owner developer Craig Young, who works for the Michael Blacker Partnership of Consulting, Structural and Civil Engineers in Reigate, took on the project and started development work earlier this year in January. He was delighted to have set up the project with Channel 4, but soon found that he was faced with a major problem. Unless he resorted to almost gutting the property and consequently completely losing the original character of the house, he would have extreme difficulty finding the necessary 21st Century fixtures and fittings that were sympathetic with the former art-deco design.

That's where Ian Morgan, local sales manager of MK Electric, came into the equation. Ian was contacted by Craig to see if complementary electrical accessories could be purchased off the shelf, but when he discovered that what he wanted was just not available anywhere, Ian offered MK's assistance. In conjunction with Kevin Fenwick and other members of the technical team back at their HQ in Basildon, Essex, MK set about creating just what was needed.

First of all, Craig needed retro-style toggle switches throughout, in itself not too much of a problem, until he specified toggle dimmers. So in conjunction with Helvar UK, specialists in digital dimmer systems, MK developed an extension to its established designer Edge range - a toggle switch dimmer. These new dimmers had the style and elegance to complement the overall renovation style, and provided all the modern convenience and functionality as well. One touch 'on', one touch 'off' and 'hold up' and 'hold down' for light level adjustment, these dimmers 'talk' to a lighting controller in the electrical distribution board to provide not just day to day lighting control, but also future -proof connectivity to security systems and the like.

Entertainment and data too:

Then, entertainment and data systems had to be considered, with another MK first being an enhanced Edge quad-plate featuring DAB, FM and twin CT100 'F' type connectors for twin satellite input requirements like Sky+, and an RGB/HV 5-pin monitor connector, allowing computer display output throughout the whole house.

Socket outlets in the kitchen with marble surrounds matching the kitchen worktops were also considered, but eventually 'Property Ladder' budget considerations prevailed, and instead, brushed stainless steel accessories with black inserts, coordinating with the kitchen equipment, were installed.

Craig couldn't speak highly enough of the support he had received from MK Electric and others involved in the project.

"Without MK taking the time and trouble to support me in this venture" said Craig "by developing brand new task-specific products within a product range already renowned for its distinctive style and good looks, who knows, I might not have even been able to complete this development."
