David Payne wins the 2003 MK Apprentice of the Year Award against many apprentices who had entered the competition from all over Britain:

It's an honour to win the MK Apprentice of the Year Award, says David Payne, who works for Hereford based electrical contracting company Melcon Ltd, adding that he was proud to bring that honour to Hereford. David won the 2003 Award against many apprentices who had entered the competition from all over Britain. Terry Williams, managing director of Melcon said for David to win such a high national honour was a credit to Melcon and to the Herefordshire College of Technology where David had studied on a day release course.

As the winner of the Award, 20 year-old David received a trophy, plus £500 in cash and £500 worth of tools. He also won for his college £1500 worth of MK Electric products.

To receive his trophy David attended a glitzy presentation ceremony in one of London's top hotels. Bernard Nash, of Melcon, and Peter Plumridge and Terry Marsh, of Herefordshire College of Technology, were there to cheer him on.

Day-long practical test:

As one of three finalists selected out of the hundreds of entrants for the competition from all over Britain, David had to undertake a day-long practical test at Barking College, Essex, to demonstrate his practical skill and expertise. He had entered the competition on the recommendation of his college lecturer, Peter Plumridge, who describes David as having been an exceptionally good student. Like Bernard Nash he is confident David has a bright and interesting future ahead of him.

By offering apprentices the chance to gain personal satisfaction and opportunities in their chosen career, the MK Award plays an important part in the maintenance of standards within the electrical industry. This is why MK Electric, the UK's premier manufacturer of electrical wiring accessories, sponsors the Award, which is one of a number of Building Services Awards organised by the magazines Building Services Journal and Electrical & Mechanical Contractor.

The runners-up:

Runners up in the MK Apprentice of the Year Award for 2003 were Daniel Morgan, who works for RM Electrical, of Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, and Gareth Stevenson, of Adair Electrics, Banbridge Co Down. Both received £200 worth of tools and both their colleges, Coleg Sir Gar (Carmarthenshire College) and the Upper Bann Institute, Portadown, received £500 worth of MK equipment.
