Am I using the correct cable for shore supply connections in accordance with BS 7671?

Published: 4 January 2021 Category: Q&A

Our ECA expert answers a question from a Voltimum user regarding what the 18th Edition says about cable usage in a marina for shore connections.

Am I using the correct cable for shore supply connections in accordance with BS 7671?

Question:

In The 18th Edition, section 709, it does not give any specification for the cable used for shore supply connections. Building sites and caravan parks etc all have H07RN - F specified. There appears to be some confusion as to the use of "So Called Arctic" cables. Are they allowed in marinas for shore connections?

Is there any clarification on this?

Answer:

Hi there, thanks for this.

BS 7671 is not always prescriptive in the material that should be used.  I would suggest in this case, you contact a cable manufacturer, the British Cable Association or BASEC for specific advice on what cable is needed in these situations.  Certainly it would merit some thought and a higher specification than you would typically see for external cabling.
