Q & A of the Day – Is there an inverter drive / motor to suit my needs?
Question: I have a machine with a three-phase motor. This is foot-mounted and it has a rating of 1.5kW with a shaft speed of 3000 rpm. A chuck is attached directly to the shaft. I use this machine for cutting slots and drilling holes, mainly in wood. To speed up production of slotting, I want to use specialised CNC router bits. These require a much faster speed - around 18,000 rpm.

Is this possible, and what products would suit this application? I would consider having a motor with 2.2kW power and possibility of having it variable speed (3000 to 18,000) so that I could change the speed to suit what I doing.

Answer: We have inverters that can operate at an output frequency up to 300Hz (ie six times base frequency, which - on a two-pole machine - would be 6 x 3000 = 18,000rpm). However, the motor itself would be a complete special because of the speed.
