Question:
Special requirements are needed for power supply for fire sprinkler pumps to minimise the possible loss of power in the event of fire. Codes and recommendations talk of over current devices needing to be rated at 6 times the normal operating current, short-circuit protection only, disconnection time not less than 75 % of the time taken for motor windings to burnout in event of a seized motor, and a prohibition of circuit breakers, i.e. use of HRC fuses only. What are the requirements in the UK? Would a 10 metre run of 2.5 mm T&E cable to power a 1.5 kW pump motor be adequate given the necessary increased rating of the over-current protection?
