Q & A of the Day – Which reference method for a cable in a loft running across the top of insulation?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: Could you please tell me which reference method is applicable to a cable in a loft running across the top of insulation?

I’m being told by colleagues to '100 ' it but it clearly isn't subject to the same conditions as if it were beneath 100mm of insulation - and to de-rate to such extent would seem excessive. What are your views?

Answer: If cabling in a loft is installed on top of the insulation, then this would be ‘clipped direct’ Method C.
