What would cause shrink back on a domestic electric fire?

One of our followers on Facebook had a question about an electric heater discovered on a recent job. It's fair to say the heater has seen better days.

What would cause shrink back on a domestic electric fire?

Question:

Just wondering what would cause shrink back on a domestic electric fire.

Stopped working last night and on inspection found this.

It's not down to vibration, the lug did feel tight when I checked for any loose connections but that's not say it wasn't. There was some burning on the terminal.  So that would suggest maybe it wasn't as tight as I thought.

What do you think?

Answer:

Hard to guess, the most likely cause would be a loose terminal.  However, if there was some debris or dirt in the connection too, or something else cause a slightly reduced contact, that could be the cause.
