Peter Lane asks about whether a spur should be taken from a communal lighting circuit. His question has been answered by SELECT (Theme – Regulations & Legislation):

Question: I have an issue with a TV / Sky installer who is installing Sky into a block of flats and taking his supply from the communal lighting circuit.
I have said that this should be on its own circuit because of maintenance issues, but this installer is adamant that he is not doing anything contrary to the regulations.
Can someone advise me please?
Answer: A spur should not really be taken from a communal lighting circuit as the division of the circuits of the installation will not meet the requirements of Section 314 - in particular, Regulations 314.1 and 314.2.
Any work on circuits associated with the communal areas should be made with the authorisation of the property landlords (e.g. the Local Authority).
