Our Voltimum Experts answer your questions on a daily basis in our Technical Expertise area. This one, concerning fire rated downlighters in a domestic property and their installation, is answered by Cooper Lighting and Safety:

Now having cut the holes, I have noticed that the original ceiling is backed by polystyrene about an inch thick for insulation. How can I installed the lights without fear of causing problems with the polystyrene?
Answer: The issue you have will be one of heat. In this instance, the only solution would be to speak direct to the original manufacture, supplying the part number of the downlight and details of the depth of the void. From this information, the manufacturer should be able to determine the suitability of the installation. If the manufacturer is unable to provide this information, I would NOT proceed with the installation, but look for an alternative product for which this information is available.
