Regulation 421.1.201 in Amendment 3 to the wiring regulations not only calls for non combustible enclosures but requires non combustible enclosure on similar switchgear too.
Similar switchgear includes switchgear that is used for the same fundamental purpose as consumer units i.e. circuit protection applications within domestic household premises. For this purpose Wylex have introduced a range of Meter Cabinet Consumer Units (previously known as Skeleton or FAL units) in full non combustible all metal enclosures and these units meet the requirements of the relevant product standards and those of BS7671 Amendment 3 Wiring Regulations.
Meter cabinet consumer units are often used in high rise, and other similar, applications where the electricity meter is housed within a cabinet outside of the dwelling and the consumer unit is located in the same enclosure in the space above the meter. Wylex, market leader in domestic circuit protection products recognizes the fact that landlords & their electrical contractors have a need for these items as well as the more regular off the shelf all metal consumer units so that installations within meter cabinets can be completed to the latest regulation in BS7671 that is mandatory from January 1st 2016.
There are three dimensional sizes in this unique range and these are designed to fit the most common sizes of meter cabinet. The design includes a full metal enclosure with an adjustable cable chamber at the top that is designed to provide mechanical protection, and a neat finish that will not permit unauthorized access within the unit.
Meter cabinet consumer units are available in several configurations including Main Switch control, Split Load, High Integrity, Dual RCD and Dual Tariff versions with models up to 14 outgoing ways.
Cable entry locations are provided at top, rear, and bottom elevations of the enclosure and the 32mm cable entry knockouts can be used with the EIU mains tails gland so that the tails benefit from the added mechanical protection provided by the construction of the gland, this also helps to avoid disturbance of the tails, and aides compliance with the necessary IP ratings for installed consumer units and compliance with BS7671 and the recommendations in the IET ON Site Guide.
A range of flame retardant cable entry grommets is also available for outgoing circuits, and a non combustible cover blank is available for unused ways
The enclosure is finished in low smoke & fume paint includes a metal door that is hinged from the top and cannot be left open after use, thereby aiding fire containment. Wylex meter cabinet consumer units are RoHS compliant in excess of UK standards and UKAS Certified to BS EN 61439-3
