A Voltimum user asked the question: Since the introduction of BS7671: 18th Edition should we all be installing type A RCDs instead of type AC?

In what situations do you install a type A RCD?

This Q & A is one of the thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area and answered by our Voltimum Experts.

Question:

Since the 18th edition, there has been lots said about 100 amp A type RCDs. Should we be installing these now in new consumer units rather than the type AC RCDs?

My only thing is the A type consumer units are a lot more expensive so people are going to under cut prices and install the old ones.

Answer:

Regulation 531.3.3 requires RCD’s to be selected, taking into consideration DC components and frequencies.

It is a requirement to select at least type A RCD for EV charging installations in accordance with regulation 722.531.2.101 and for PV installations in section 712, regulation 712.411.3.2.1.2 may require a type B RCD.

In addition to these specific requirmenmts , a type A RCD should be considered where some of the following equipment is installed:

  • LED lighting.
  • Variable speed drive.
  • UPS systems
  • Lighting and heating controls.
  • Appliances such as washing machines, induction hobs dishwashers and fridges.
