Question:
Since the 18th edition, there has been lots said about 100 amp A type RCDs. Should we be installing these now in new consumer units rather than the type AC RCDs?
My only thing is the A type consumer units are a lot more expensive so people are going to under cut prices and install the old ones.
Answer:
Regulation 531.3.3 requires RCD’s to be selected, taking into consideration DC components and frequencies.
It is a requirement to select at least type A RCD for EV charging installations in accordance with regulation 722.531.2.101 and for PV installations in section 712, regulation 712.411.3.2.1.2 may require a type B RCD.
In addition to these specific requirmenmts , a type A RCD should be considered where some of the following equipment is installed:
- LED lighting.
- Variable speed drive.
- UPS systems
- Lighting and heating controls.
- Appliances such as washing machines, induction hobs dishwashers and fridges.
