I have a consumer unit to change on a TN-S system. The bonding to water is 6mm and going be really hard to change. I have been reading that 6mm is fine as long as no thermal damage to a cable on a TN-S system - is this correct?

Yes, that is correct. In most cases 6 mm cable is adequate in TN-S dwellings.
