What can Luckins do for you?

Published: 9 August 2018 Category: News

In this article, we take a closer look at the benefits that the Luckins database from Trimble can offer electrical contractors.

What can Luckins do for you?

Product data or content is the bedrock for key business processes and workflows throughout the construction life cycle. With the diversity and technical complexity of the products available, this is perhaps even more true for the electrical industry than for other construction sectors.  From design, through estimating, procurement, O&M production and service and maintenance, electrical contractors rely on rich, accurate product content to facilitate each process.

At the heart of contractors’ and distributors’ business processes

In the UK, the Luckins database now covers almost 1.5 million items from over 800 manufacturers.  The original concept, to provide a comprehensive source of accurate, up-to-date trade price data, is still critical to the estimating and procurement process so it is no surprise that so many of the country’s major M&E contractors, including most of the top 30, use Luckins data combined with suppliers’ discount data to provide an accurate basis for materials pricing.   Many electrical distributors also rely on Luckins to maintain data in their ERP, stock and sales order processing systems guaranteeing synchronised price data across the supply chain.  As a result, Luckins’ unique product code, the TSI Code, provides a simple, effective means of exchanging discount, net price and other e-commerce related data between trading partners.

The introduction of LUCKINSlive has added another dimension to the service.  This cloud- based content platform contains an increasing range of rich product content including images, technical data sheets and catalogue pages.  The LUCKINSlive content is a valuable stand-alone resource but its true value is only realised when the content is integrated into other cloud-based or desk top systems.  For example, a buyer or site engineer could access and view pictures and technical details of a product directly from within a procurement application, either in the office or on site, resulting in reduction of product selection errors and a more efficient overall purchasing process.    Imaginative and innovative use of the product content such as this has repeatedly been shown to result in significant increases in efficiency and cost saving.

Close relationship with manufacturers

Luckins content is sourced directly from manufacturers and developed and managed with their close collaboration to ensure high standards of accuracy.  From the manufacturer’s perspective, placing product data on the Luckins platform enables it to be accessible by users at the precise time and place when a buying decision is made and, supported by a range of advertising opportunities and detailed analytics, is now a key element of many manufacturers’ marketing strategy.

A Global Vision

Globally, Trimble’s MEP Division covers four trusted content platforms including Luckins in the UK, Trade Service and Building Data based in the USA and MEPcontent, an extensive library of manufacturer-specific BIM content based in the Netherlands and listing many major European manufacturers.  In addition to these, Trimble also creates and manages specialised technical content for applications such as the Amtech Electrical Design Suite.  While the content currently resides on several platforms, Trimble’s vision is to combine geometrical, technical and transactional data to offer a one stop solution for the industry’s content needs and simultaneously offer manufacturers a single global channel for syndication and distribution of their product data.
