A new purpose-built facility in Bromborough will support the company’s growth plans for power factor correction (PFC) and harmonic filtering solutions. By James Hunt:
ABB’s UK Power Quality business has opened its new facility at Bromborough, just six miles away along the Wirral Peninsula in Merseyside from its long-standing home at Ellesmere Port. The reason for the move is that ABB’s Ellesmere Port home had started to limit the company’s plans for further expansion into power quality products, systems and service.
The relocation took place over two weeks, starting on the 1st of June, with every effort made for continuity of service to customers during the successful move.
The company says that its new unit in Bromborough’s Riverview Business Park offers 1,700m2 (18,500 ft2) of space, which enables the provision of ‘an even better service’ to the growing customer base across the UK. The speed of response in particular will be better. The new facility will also provide the flexibility and capability for special project development work – now and in the future.
For industrial customers
Essentially, the Bromborough site will support industrial customers who need two main types of power quality equipment - power factor correction (PFC) and harmonic filtering. PFC solutions enable industrial customers to reduce the load on their electricity supply, saving on electricity bills and freeing up capacity for new loads.
Harmonic filters eliminate the troublesome harmonics (or noise) that can affect electrical supplies, causing unexplained shutdowns as well as premature equipment failures.
For example, ABB’s PQF active devices are, the company states, ‘the ultimate answer to difficult power quality problems caused by harmonics, load unbalance and reactive power demand’. They can be applied to small, medium or large applications and are suitable for both industrial and commercial installations in low voltage (LV) networks. They can also be used in medium voltage (MV) networks through the use of a coupling transformer.
Other new and recent ABB power products include industrial light UPS, as well as modifications to voltage conditioning systems that will, the company explains, ‘assist in enhancing power quality to new levels of efficiency and reliability’.
A new level
The relocation to Bromborough will take the company’s Power Quality business to a new level. Explained David Hughes, Head of Power Products & Front End Sales, UK and Ireland: “For some time, we realised that there’s a wealth of growth opportunities in the power quality sector, but the limitations of Ellesmere Port have acted as a brake on our ambitions.
“This move to Bromborough”, he continued, “is a brilliant opportunity to both boost our levels of customer service and to explore new opportunities, especially as power quality is becoming an increasingly important factor in business continuity.”
