Snag 52 - Identification of conductors in a swa cable

Published: 11 January 2008 Category: News

Identification of conductors in a swa cable Where a 3-core steel wire armoured (swa) cable is selected for use in a single-phase circuit, the conductors must be properly identified. Snag 52 Failure to properly identify the cores of a 3-core swa cable could present difficulties for an electrician carrying out maintenance or modification work in the future.

Snag 52 - Identification of conductors in a swa cable

Solution
Every single-core non-flexible cable and every core of non-flexible cable for use as fixed wiring shall be identifiable, as its terminations and preferably throughout its length, by an appropriate method identified in Regulation 514-03-01.

Regulation 514-03-01
Except where identification is not required by Regulation 514-06, cores of cables shall be identified by:
colour as required by Regulation 514-04 and/or
lettering and/or numbering as required by Regulation 514-05.

Regulation 514-04-01
Where a circuit includes a neutral or mid-point conductor identified by colour, the colour used shall be blue.

Regulation 514-04-02 (part of)
The bi-colour combination green-and-yellow shall be used exclusively for identification of a protective conductor and this combination shall not be used for any other purpose.

Regulation 514-04-04
Other conductors shall be identified by colour in accordance with Table 51.

Phase of single-phase circuit L Brown
Neutral of single or three-phase circuit N Blue
