David Symmington asks this question, which concerns the possible installation of a separate earth on the metal frame of a festive lighting feature to the earth of the external socket. It has been answered by SELECT (Theme – Regulations & Legislation):
Question: Do I need to install a separate earth on the metal frame of a double insulated (Class 2) festive lighting feature to the earth of the external Commando socket?
The socket may (or may not) be fed via an RCD. Some manufacturers are upgrading fittings and have been doing this, but is it a requirement?
Answer: From BS 7671:2008(2011) - Regulation 559.4.1: 'Every luminaire should be selected and erected in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions'.
You should also provide a circuit protective conductor at every relevant point in the installation for Class 1 or Class 2 rated equipment.
