Q & A of the Day – Does this flat’s main earth need upgrading?
Question: I have just looked at a job that requires a new consumer unit and main bonding to gas and water. The submain feeding the flat is approximately 6m in length and consists of a 16mm twin & earth cable (with 6mm CPC) fed from the main communal meter cupboard by 60A fusewire / isolator (Wylex).

Does the main earth to the flat concerned need upgrading from 6mm to 16mm and, if so, can I run it in surface minitrunking around the communal area up to the flat?

Answer: The earthing conductor should be upgraded to 16mm2.
