Question: Can I place the consumer unit about 20 metres from the meter, what size of cable will I need and what fuses etc?
Answer: As long as you apply a fused isolator at the meter, you will require to check from the On Site Guide, Appendix 1, 'Maximum Demand and Diversity' for cable size, as I am unaware of type of property you have and the load.
You will also require to apply to your local distributor for an isolator switch if you need access to metering arrangement - for example, breaking of the meter seals.
