New Infrastructure-as-a-Service transforms how software is developed

Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management and automation, today introduced Wonderware Online InStudio, an Infrastructure-as-a-Service offering that revolutionises the way software engineers, Systems Integrators and end users can provision, develop, test and maintain their HMI and SCADA applications. Wonderware Online InStudio is part of the evolution of Wonderware Online cloud platform. This collection of industrial data aggregation, storage and visualisation functionalities is now called Wonderware Online InSight, built on Microsoft Azure (read more here).
This announcement closely aligns to strategic advice touted by McKinsey & Company in their August 2016 article, Digital in Industry: From Buzzword to Value Creation. Their recommendation: “In order to maintain the efficiency and stability of existing operations while providing the processing capacity and speed required by new data-driven activities, smart companies move to a two-speed IT infrastructure—overlaying a fast, next-generation cloud-based IT system on their secure, robust, resilient legacy systems.”
Wonderware Online InStudio is a secure, cloud subscription service that lets Systems Integrators overlay a next-generation infrastructure that is highly available and scalable. This offering supports improved collaboration during the development process across geographies and roles. Potential benefits include improved customer experiences, optimised delivery of software engineering services, enhanced application designs, faster user adoption and lower project costs. InStudio provides a multifaceted environment used for development, testing, version management, and training.
With Wonderware Online InStudio, software engineers can:
- Decrease time to provision development, testing, and training environments
- Create virtual machines in a few clicks; start instantly with pre-loaded VM images
- Reduce hardware costs; set automated shutdowns to minimise costs
- Shorten quote times while improving accuracy
- Create ‘safe’ environments for proof-of-concepts, change management, testing and version upgrading
InStudio joins Wonderware Online InSight, as the latest addition to its growing portfolio of Wonderware Online cloud-first, mobile-first technologies specifically designed to improve operational efficiency.
Research suggests that cloud-based Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) and other offerings have considerable potential to deploy less energy and natural resources, such as through the reduction of hardware requirements for software development testing. This environmental benefit – coupled with greater collaboration and efficiency – can reduce a company’s overall carbon footprint, part of a transformation Schneider Electric refers to as “Life is On.” By offering a cloud option, Schneider Electric advances its “innovation at every level” philosophy, which is at the core of everything the company does.
Wonderware Online InStudio will be Generally Available in November, 2016.
