RCD protection of external circuits

Published: 10 October 2018 Category: Q&A

Requirements for failed lighting circuits on an EICR.

Question:

Is there a requirement to protect a circuit with an RCD wired in swa cables?

Some background: We have a job to replace some bollard lighting that has failed an EICR inspection as some of them are broken. The bollards are on the communal grounds of a housing development, and the lighting circuit is a mixture of bollards and lamp-posts.

Answer:

Gary Parker

Not necessarily. There is no requirement in BS 7671 to RCD-protect external circuits or cables underground unless there are other elements in play such as the installation is part of a TT earthing system or there are high earth fault loop impedance values.
