Question: If an electrical contractor undertakes the wiring of desk power in the form of 13A 1363 plugs, 3C flex and socket strips in desk management systems:
- Does the testing referred to in BS 6396: 2008 need to be certificated?
- Although not referred to as a required test in BS 6396: 2008, does the RCD on the power strip need to be tested by the electrical contractor or can the contractor rely on manufacturer’s type testing?
Answer by the NICEIC: If BS 6396 requires testing to be carried out and a form of certification given, then that is not the form required by BS 7671: 2008, as this is a different standard.
The RCD testing should be carried out on a regular basis to check that the self-test function is working.
If regular maintenance is provided, then it would be prudent to have an electrician carry out electrical testing on the RCD to ensure that the device is working within the required times given by the manufacturer for compliance.
Answer by the ECA: Inspection and testing should be carried out in accordance with BS 7671, and as detailed in BS 6396. Regarding the testing of the RCD on the power strip, as this is a factory preassembled module, the manufacturer’s type testing is all that is needed.
