Q & A of the Day - Will this oven need RCD protection?
Question: We have been asked to connect up a new double oven, which requires a 32A supply. The existing oven is a single oven type and is connected to the existing 32A cooker circuit (6mm) through a fused outlet, which we intend to change for a non-fused cooker outlet.

Do we have to change the existing MCB to an RCBO, or can the circuit be left as it is, with only the outlet needing to be changed?

Answer: BS 7671: 2008 applies to any new circuitry installed. Therefore there is no requirement to upgrade the circuit protection to include an RCD, provided that the existing circuit conditions are satisfactory in terms of being able to achieve automatic disconnection in the required disconnection time.
