Q & A of the Day - What Code for this existing installation having no RCD protection?
Question: An existing installation (work place), includes some living accommodation and workshops with 13A sockets installed with no RCD protection. The 17th Edition is not retrospective - however, would RCD protection be a requirement of Health & Safety, or the Electricity at Work Regulations?

What Code (1,2,or 4) should be applied on the test certificate?

Answer: As you indicate, the 17th Edition requirements are not retrospective. However, if the sockets are likely to supply external equipment, then a Code 1 is perhaps appropriate.

If this is not the case and the sockets are being used by ordinary persons, and if the area is not under the control of a skilled person, then perhaps a Code 2 may be applicable. In all situations the element of danger should be individually assessed.
