Q & A of the Day – What Code for the EICR on RCD protection of cables concealed in a wall that don’t meet the requirements?

This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: With the introduction of Amendment 3 to BS 7671 regarding RCD protection of cables that are concealed in a wall or partition, etc. (that do not meet certain criteria), what classification code should we, as a building owner, expect to see issued by the inspector on the report, where the installation method of existing cables does not comply with the requirements of the Amendment?

Having read the guidance from ‘Electrical Safety First’ in its updated Best Practice Guide 4, this would appear to indicate that a Code 3 (Improvement Recommended) would generally be appropriate. Is this so?

Answer: The NICEIC / ELECSA recommendation Code for this departure can be found where you describe in Best Practice Guide No 3.

It is down to the judgement of the inspector to classify the Code, but it would normally be regarded as a Code 3.
