Q & A of the Day – Should we switch off the capacitor bank when the genset is in use?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: A client has been requesting that we switch off the capacitor bank on a low voltage panel when the site's generator is in use.

Can you please advise as to whether this is correct and if so, why?

Answer: Most generator manufacturers recommend switching off any power factor correction equipment when running on a generator electrical supply.

The reason for this is to prevent the possibility of having a leading power factor, which can cause generator set failures, or the failure of certain loads to operate properly on a generator set.
