Q & A of the Day – Should a vehicle inspection pit be classified as a hazardous area?
This Q & A is one of thousands posted in our Technical Expertise area, and answered on a daily basis by our Voltimum Experts.

Question: My question is regarding the electrical installation within a motor vehicle inspection pit. I have viewed various documents and articles regarding the above, but not one seems to give any clear guidance whatsoever. Ultimately the information I'm after is whether the above are classified as a hazardous areas under DSEAR, ATEX, HSE etc. Are they?

Answer: If there is no defined guidance available, should I use a specialist to carry out a risk assessment to determine whether or not the inspection pit is, in fact, a hazardous area - or simply err on the side of safety and use correctly rated equipment suitable for use in hazardous areas.

The installation would require hazardous area approval and special equipment would need to be installed for the provision of a safe environment.
